Care For Your New Garage Door To Preserve Its Condition

Posted on: 25 April 2018

You've finally gotten around to investing in a new garage door and you're going to need to know how to take care of it so you won't have to invest again for many, many years. Here, you'll learn a few tips that can help you keep your garage door in great condition for the foreseeable future.

Clean and Lubricate the Hardware

The hardware goes through a lot each time the door opens and closes. About every six months or so, the hardware will need to be cleaned and lubricated. Get a broom and knock down any loose cobwebs and dirt that is on the tracks.

If the dirt won't come off with a broom, get a bucket of very hot water with some liquid dish soap mixed in. Scrub the track clean. It can take some time if the lubricant has caked up with dirt, but making sure that the track is clean will help to prevent rust from occurring.

Use a can of WD-40 to lubricate the tracks, rollers, and hinges to keep them moving smoothly.

Inspect the Rubber Seal

The rubber seal at the base of the garage door stops water from flowing into the garage during heavy rains. Eventually, that rubber seal will begin to crack and break down. Take the time to inspect the seal at least once a year to make sure that it doesn't have any cracks or damage that will allow water to make its way into the garage.

If you notice damage, you can replace it relatively easily. Just purchase a replacement from your local retailer, remove the old one, and slide the new one into place. Trim the ends to make sure that it doesn't get caught up on the tracks.

Safety Test

The safety features need to be tested every few months to ensure they are working properly.

Test the reverse sensors – these are the sensors found at the base of the opening of the garage door. They are meant to send the door into reverse if a person, pet, or thing passes through the door as it is closing.

To test this feature, simply get a board or broomstick and press the button to close the garage door. Hold the board or broomstick in front of the sensor. If the door goes back to the open position, it's working just fine. If the door continues to close, the door needs serviced immediately.
