Garage Door Torsion Springs Damaged? Information On How They Are Replaced

Posted on: 5 October 2022

If the torsion springs on your garage door are not working, you cannot open the door at all.  Torsion springs are made of heavy metal and are under a lot of tension. If you are not experienced at working with these springs hire a professional to replace them for you. They can cause serious injury and even death if not done correctly. The springs could break, which causes the heavy metal to fly through the air. Below is information on how the contractor replaces these springs and how to maintain them.

Install New Springs

The first thing the contractor will do is measure the springs to decide what they need to purchase as a replacement. The torsion spring sits inside a torsion shaft. The contractor removes the damaged spring and then inserts the new spring in the shaft. Most garages have two torsion springs, one on the left and one on the right. The garage door contractor may suggest you replace both of them even if one of the springs has no damage.

There are cable drums and a drum that is attached to the torsion springs that help them move up and down as the garage door is opened and closed. These cable drums and drum will also likely be replaced during this time. If your garage has two torsion springs the contractor will ensure both are set to the right tension so the door opens and closes smoothly. When the contractor is finished, they spray the new torsion springs with a lubricant.

Maintain New Torsion Springs

To maintain your new torsion springs you need to purchase a garage door lubricant. Over time the lubricant will deteriorate, and the garage door torsion springs will have friction as they open and close your garage door.

You will have to open the garage door a little at a time to apply the lubricant. This is because the entire torsion spring is not exposed at the same time. This may take time but will be well worth it when your springs last much longer for you. Ask someone to help you as you will need to be on a ladder when applying the lubricant. The other person can open the garage door as needed.

While you are applying the lubricant if you notice any problems with the torsion springs contact a professional immediately. This may be rust on the springs or the springs may look like they are degrading.

The garage door repair contractor can give you much more information on how they replace torsion springs.
